The commit-timing gap

On a long lane, the box is billed before the cut stops moving.

The vessel's CY cut keeps moving until it settles a few days out. A short rail lane commits after that, with the window already firm. A long lane has to commit a week or more out - while the cut is still forming. That gap is the exposure the Rail Edition is built for.

The inland box is committed at rail-billing, roughly 10 to 14 days before the vessel sails - the longest lead time in the chain. The rail schedule itself is reliable; what moves is the port cut it has to hit. When the ocean carrier advances that cut after the box is already on the train, a leg that was on time is suddenly short - and there is no rerouting a box that is already inland. Safe-to-Commit evaluates whether that cut is stable enough to commit against, before the rail leg is locked.

The rail runway

The rail cut-off at your ramp plus the lane's transit gives the box's arrival at the port; measured against the CY cut, that is your true buffer. The longer the lane, the earlier the cut has to be trusted - and the less room there is to absorb a move.

Step 03

The decision

Commit, Buffer with risk, or Book alternative. When the cut behind the leg is unstable, the output includes the buffer to hold or the firmer sailing to book - with a timestamped record of what the schedule showed when the call was made.
